Sony has effectively sealed the fate of the PS Vita going forward after announcing that it is stopping development of first-party titles to focus on the PS4. SCE Senior VP Masayasu Ito revealed that there are no first-party titles in development, and since third parties are still developing for the PS Vita, Sony will be focusing on the PS4 instead.
Ito has the following to say in an interview with 4Gamer (translated by Dualshockers): “Currently, first party studios have no titles in development for PS Vita. Since third parties are working very hard on PS Vita, SCE’s own strategy is to focus on PS4, which is a new platform.”
Its already apparent that development for the PS Vita is starting to slow down as fewer new games are released for the platform. In fact, this year has seen a distinct lack of AAA titles for the console. With this announcement, it won’t be very long before other developers also refocus their attention to newer platforms.
Ito also revealed that the PS Vita is becoming popular with younger games (those under 20) thanks to games like Minecraft. As a result, new PS Vita colours are releasing this fall.
